Reactions within Abstractions
Sept. 19th - Nov. 28, 2022

CHRISTOPHER GROVES
VIRTUAL 6-part Workshop Series
"Painting the Abstract" ~ Reactions within Abstractions
6 Sessions - Sept. 19, Oct. 3, Oct. 17, Oct 31, Nov 14, Nov 28, 2022
Every Other Monday, 9 - 11:30 am

$595

This zoom workshop will be held every other week (dates above), and will include lectures, demos, living and deceased abstract artist reviews, assignments, and student critiques. Students can submit one painting each week to be critiqued and analyzed at the end of each session. Sessions will be recorded each week and can be viewed afterward in case one cannot attend a particular weeks session.

This zoom workshop is designed to push the “beginner to the advanced” painter in fostering their knowledge, technique, reaction-process, and analysis of abstraction. Whether you want to paint purely abstract or not, the foundation and structure to solid painting is based on simple elements and principles of abstraction. Learning these skills will be a vital part to “refining” as an artist. This workshop will address many topics: getting started, variety in mark making color theory, design, visual and physical reaction, personal process and individual taste, critiquing your own work, as well as finishing and presentation.

GARY BODNER

Getting REAL Loose
Sept. 30th - Oct. 1, 2022

GARY BODNER
Getting REAL Loose
September 30 - October 1, 2022
Two Days in the Artists Annex Studio
Medium . Acrylic
$495

This workshop will focus on expressionistic painting and loosening up your style. You will be asked to bring four or five paintings that you are currently working on but have not completed. He will demonstrate on your canvases, with permission. Sizes may range from 40x40 to 8x10. Gary encourages big color, big strokes, big movement, play and a fun, learning environment. He describes his work as strong and colorful with an expressionistic style. He will encourage each student to think more creatively and with more expression.

Gary Bodner studied architecture at Miami University of Ohio before entering Chicago Medical School. He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. Gary recently retired after 38 years and is now focused on his 15-year artistic craft with painting and travel. “The power of juxtaposing or placing one color on top of another to create an image is what drives my paintings,” he says. Primarily, Bodner considers himself a colorist and is constantly looking for the interplay of colors on his canvases. He has been inspired by works of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Philip Johnson, architect. His medium is ever involving and he is currently exploring the use of oil-based house paint. "The color combinations possible with the mixture of paints is something that really drives me.”

LARRY MOORE

4-days Principals of Abstraction XL
Oct. 20 - Oct. 23, 2022

LARRY MOORE
Principles of Abstraction XL
Medium: Acrylic, Oil
4-days - October 20 - 23, 2022
9 am - 4 pm
$595

Exploring abstracts on a larger scale in the medium of your choosing, this 4-day class will push you into new territory where growth lives only upsized, now with bigger risks and bigger rewards. You will be shown a system for developing your voice as an artist with a focus on the principles of design and the language of abstraction. The emphasis is on creative process, exploring new ways to develop a painting, create inventive compositions, and build authentic intent in your work. Larry’s intent is to help each artists find a way that works for them, whether they wish to interpret more, push their process or go fully abstract. He’s worked extensively in almost every medium, so all mediums are welcome.

The class is as much a challenge for all, experienced or novice, but it’s not for the rank beginner. A reasonable understanding of color mixing and paint handling will come in very handy. While it is an open medium class, acrylic is recommended for its quick drying time.
Many of the core concepts in this class can be found in Larry’s book on creativity, “Fishing for elephants. Insights and exercises to inspire authentic creativity”. It’s not a requirement, but a cursory read of the workbook will give you a leg up on this class… and life. Available through Amazon.com

Bring a sense of humor and an open mind.

HOW IS A VASE LIKE A FARM SILO? Designed for the plein air painter who doesn’t want to paint in extreme weather, this class will help students see that they don’t need to wait for pleasant days to practice their outdoor painting skills. Students will set up and paint still life in a way that can replicate conditions that one might see outdoors. Through daily demos, lecture and painting exercises, the instructor will show how the principles that apply to painting the landscape can help make one a better painter of any subject. Through careful analysis of each situation, you will learn to start slow but finish fast. Students will paint a different set up each day.

Remember the paintings you love when you visit museums or art exhibitions? Did they draw you in and make you feel an emotional connection? I like to call that the WOW factor!
This workshop is designed for students wishing to move their work in that direction. You will practice loosening your style and capturing light, color and that emotional moment. Emphasis will be placed on concept, design/ composition, value, color, brushwork and edges to create harmonious paintings. Large abstract mass simplification and value to begin a painting will be stressed. Seeing color and the temperature of light, as it affects the scene and then mixing the right color and value to convey that. Paint application and brushwork will follow. Finally, we will cover pulling all these elements together to make an emotional statement about your subject. We as artists are creating a work of art rather than just rending what is in front of us. Seeing like an artist is what it is all about!

This 3 day workshop will involve exercises, lectures, demos and discussion around what each student hopes to achieve and how to get there. Historical and modern references will be explored.

This will be a studio workshop with a landscape element and possibly still life. If weather permits we will do plein air at least one day.
